Jandek

Jandek is an artist, presumably from Houston, Texas, who has recorded atleast 55 albums since 1978, all of which have been released by Corwood Industries.  In the beginning, his records could only be obtained by writing to a certain PO Box in Houston.  Through this medium, one could obtain a free catalog of Corwood releases at inexpensive prices.  Although it is now possible to buy Jandek albums at finer record stores, Box 15375 is still answering letters with catalogs and CDs.

The Jandek oeuvre began with albums composed of solitary voice and guitar, progressed through recordings that utilized multiple instruments, returned to its solitary origins, and then flowered again through numerous transformations.  Jandek has only given one real interview despite numerous attempts by writers and critics to contact him.  Recent years have witnessed the first live performances by the representative of Corwood Industries. These performances typically receive little or no publicity before-hand.

Jandek’s songs can vary greatly, but they typically seem to draw on a late night, stream-of-consciousness type feeling. The music is an atmosphere, a thought, a microcosm that visits itself upon you, pure and unfiltered; expanding and filling your perception. For a little while you are allowed to stare straight into it.
