JOSEPH CHILDRESS

If you missed our write up from two weeks ago about Joseph, you can go read about him here. Bottom line is Childress is an artist to watch. If you go out to one show this month it should be to see him. Also, this is one of his last few shows before he goes into the studio to record, so catch him now.

ORA COGAN

Ora is a Vancouver BC Singer songwriter who has an amazing voice and a very classic old-time sound somewhere between a scratched 78 and a lost Karen Dalton recording. Here’s some of her info and music.

“Ora’s voice possesses that haunting, soulful quality that seems like its source is coming from deep deep within or beyond. Like a mysterious transplant from decades past, it’s as though she opens her mouth and a lilting voice from the ’20s comes drifting out. It’s beautiful in its simplicity, just her and her guitar and a few banjo and back-up vocal additions. “- AQUARIUS RECORDS

HACKLES:
The debut of the solo project of Bay Area poet and musician Andrew Connors of Snowblink, Like Circles, and Mountainhood.

GABRIEL SALOMAN AJA ROSE
It’s quiet sleepy, lo-fi noise with guitar, trumpet, tapes, odds and ends. Kind of like Islaja, or Colleen, but a bit junkier.
It’s pretty new so we got no fancy websites.
I used to live in Oakland (now in Portland, OR), and I play in bands who’ve been around town such as Yellow Swans and Cex Fucx. Aja Rose has released some solo work, is a member of In Flux, and a co-founder of the Her Jazz Women’s Noise Collective.

June 10th sees the new release of Karen Dalton’s Green Rocky Road, a collection of songs dating from 1962-1963. Like last years Cotton Eyed Joe, Green Rocky Road finds Dalton in her early 20’s and at ease in the studio- it wouldn’t be until her later 60’s official studio albums that she would release a full record. The collection of home demos taped by Joe Loop on Green Rocky Road, provide a glimpse and listen of what a full studio album would have sounded like if she had released the songs as an album. To hear Dalton in her early 20’s is a really endearing and to know how strongly she was influencing those around her at the time only adds to the experience.

Baby Dee: Black Cab Session

From Black Cab:

“We’re greeted by Baby Dee – Drag City’s latest signing. Our initial trepidation at the sight of her fiery red hair and enormous Dr. Martin boots quickly vanishes as she reveals a wonderfully warm, calming persona. Armed with an accordion or as John calls it, a ‘gadget’, Dee plays a few opening chords of ‘Safe Inside the Day’ and for the next five minutes we’re transported a different world. Such a heartfelt voice has not been heard in these headphones for years. Her guitarist, Paul, accompanies on backing vocals, playing delicate guitar patterns beneath Dee’s sustained squeeze box, her voice floating through the interior of the now very steamy black cab. It’s a pleasure to witness this transgendered genius at work. We drop her back at the venue. John is beaming from cheek to cheek. We all are, having witnessed something extremely intimate and beautiful.”
