If I promise not to tell anyone will you give me any midwest tour dates that Devendra will be playing under the stipulation that I will love you forever?
April 10, 2007 at 4:02 pm
a little suggestion. are you Naturallies familiar with the music from In Gowin Ring?
i recently remembered them and found their space. i am from Salt Lake City and recall that some of the players where from mormontown. they have been producing some great independent music for 15 years.
quite the precursor to “freak Folk” or naruralismo.
i hope you enjoy….

I’ve got one qualm with the blog, and that happens to be with that one article with the idea of “fake folk”, again this goes against the ethos that the person who coined the term. As he eloquently said:
“We don’t want to be anti-artifice. We don’t want to be against anything or elitist in any way.’ I agreed.” “Then I started thinking about something I’ve said in every interview, which is that everything is a derivative of nature. Everything. Even the most plastic, most synthetic things are derived from nature. The source of them is found in nature at some point. Naturalismo becomes a completely all-inclusive thing. If there’s one thing we can take from Tropicalismo, it’s this anthropophagic attitude towards the world.”
This brings to light the definition of naturalismo, and how the guest blogger so eloquently called something “fake folk.” Naturalismo is not an exclusive term. In fact it happens to be an inclusive term, even when something is said to be of artifice or contrived. It’s all “natural.” So here I stand defending a band “Winter Flowers” which abhor, but at the same time that guestpost contradicts the very essence of the word.
Just a little alternative insight…
July 19, 2007 at 4:58 am
With that being said I do not recognize naturalismo to be a term for any sort of movement.
July 19, 2007 at 5:51 am
Yes, I have already spoken with winter flowers about this and resolved everything. I was going to take it down but we decided it is fairly amusing. I wanted to let others share their ideas on naturalismo and that was his point of view. If you’ve read anything since or even before- it is all by me and I am a much more positive individual. I didn’t want to make this blog exclusive at all. In fact, I don’t even criticize bands on Naturalismo if I don’t like them, I simply just don’t post about them. Simple as that. Sorry if it upset you… I agree though that the whole thing is a little ironic.
July 19, 2007 at 7:13 pm
Thanks for the rapid reply, it’s not that i’m upset, I just felt it was something worth noting. I just think that such malicious accusations would taint one of the (in my opinion) best contemporary folk blogs. If you ever do need help with blogging of the sort, I would be more than happy to contribute some of my free time to writing up some things, or exposing your readership to new music!

August 14, 2007 at 6:17 am
ok im assuming devendra fans will read this. well i am going to see devendra on october 13 which is the final date of the tour. and i want to give devendra a gift. but i want it to be a gift from all of his fans thanking him for what he has done for us. so… i am thinking we can make him stuff (stuff that i can bind together to make a scrap book, so it must be flat). so the plans are very vague still but if you are intersted email me mxcnskwerl@aol.com or message me on my myspace. if enough people are interested i will go into more details. thank you.

i was supposed to meet a friend 3 hours ago, but since coming across this website i’ve been unable to move - all i can do is feast my eyes on the tapestry of wonders you’ve served up here. what originally led me to you was a search for the sublime Yo Si Oigo, which my DJ friend played from his laptop at one of his club nights. trawling the archives, it seems the host has discontinued the download, so i’m wondering how i can get hold of it now? i need this compilation at my fingertips!

February 14, 2008 at 10:07 pm
you should check out Fleet Foxes. just started listening, they are beautiful.
February 17, 2008 at 7:26 pm
No Incredible String Band/Robin Williamson? The ISB and Clive Palmer (see his 70s band COB - you’re missing out on some inimitable acid folk) are cited and obvious influences for Devendra, and on top of that they’re just brilliant musicians. For shame! Other than this mad omission it’s a fantastic blog. Thanks for keeping it running.

that video is amazing…and yes, you are right, manawyddan - the dearth of ISB must be remedied soon!
“I’ll sing you this October song,
Oh, there is no song before it.
The words and tune are none of my own,
for my joys and sorrows bore it.”
