With the haunting melodies and traditional instrumentation of traditional British Isles folk (cello, harp, fiddle, acoustic guitar) underpinning Margie Wienk’s delicate vocals, Fern Knight’s new self-titled album evokes themes as disparate as man’s communion with nature to a story of twins who escape from the circus. Carrying the sonic ambition and bucolic palette of early seventies prog while maintaining a decidedly humble and atmospheric demeanor, Fern Knight’s new songs ache with emotions that run the gamut from funereal to whimsical.

I met up with Fern Knight and Ex Reverie at the Silverlake Lounge in Los Angeles last night and shot an interview and exclusive unplugged performance of Fern Knight’s new tunes “Magpie Suite, Part II and III”. Stay tuned to naturalismo, as I’ll be posting the beautiful footage soon. The new album is being released this upcoming Tuesday, May 13, so be sure to catch Fern Knight and Ex Reverie as they journey up the West Coast.

Ex Reverie, a project conjured forth from the fertile musical community of North Philadelphia, is a showcase for the talents of Gillian Chadwick. The project’s debut album The Door Into Summer was co-produced by Chadwick and Greg Weeks at Weeks’ Hexham Head Studio in North Philadelphia, and features contributions by members of Espers, Fern Knight, Woodwose, and Golden Ball among others. The music was performed primarily by Chadwick on lead vocals, guitars, dulcimer, percussion and keyboards, David Chadwick (Golden Ball) on bass, Margie Wienk (Fern Knight) playing cello, and Greg Weeks (Espers) providing acidic lead guitar, background singing, recorders and organs, along with drummer Julius Masri and additional touches by violinists Katt Hernandez and Gretchen Lohse and flautist Jessica Weeks.

It all went down at the Dances of Vice Festival: Neo-Victorian Ball at Element on Feb. 9th, where Rasputina was joined on stage by members of Espers, Ex-Reverie and Fern Knight for a rousing encore of Heart’s “Barracuda.’ As far as I know this is the only photo from the event but if you have more, please send ‘em in.
