The Deep were a Philadelphia-based studio-only band whose one and only album, Psychedelic Moods, was released to critical acclaim in 1966. Predating even Pink Floyd’s Piper at the Gates of Dawn, the album was recorded in a darkened Philadelphia studio in only one night. Perhaps there was some acid involved? This pioneering album was the first album ever to have the word “psychedelic” in its title and is well-established as an underground psych classic.  Invented and produced by Mark Barkan and Rusty Evans and the legendary David Bromberg (whose playing credits include just about everybody from Bob Dylan to Jerry Jeff Walker) Psychedelic Moods is hailed as the very first album with a consistent psychedelic theme running throughout. To the modern ear, the kitsch factor is unavoidable. Regardless, it’s a fascinating document for anyone interested in exploring the origins of American psychedelic rock.
