More and more I’m beginning to realize that Animal Collective are one of the most influential and wholly original artists to come about in the last decade. There’s simply no artist before or after that has captured anywhere near their level of frenetic and electric animism that echoes from their songs. Their fast-paced, prolific, ahead of their time songwriting, sets them several albums ahead of what I hear coming from many other so called buzz band indie rock acts. It’s discouraging to listen to much of what is popular in indie music these days when you hear so many pages being ripped from Animal Collectives back catalogue. True of any band ahead of their time the bands that borrow seem to be about 3 albums behind anywhere near the territory Animal Collective paves. I’ve been completely elated the past few days listening to these three new Animal Collective ‘micromixes’ compiled by Animal Collective members Avey, Panda and Geologist. It’s always a good moment when you take a step back from whatever you’re listening to and put on a mix-tape that just completely takes your ears into an entirely different realm that’s entirely orchestrated by another. Thanks to Bradford Cox of Deerhunter for organizing the mixes. If you didn’t download the micromix he made for Naturalismo a bit back you should go grab it now, IT’S GREAT. I have a similarly high opinion of Deerhunters achievements in the past year and a half.
For posterity’s sake here’s all 3 members micromixes in one .zip file and don’t forget to read each members micro mix description:

Comment by Travis July 9, 2008 @ 7:58 amCan you post these in a non-Mac format… I’d really like to hear them and it would be easy for everyone to check them out if they were in a universal format such as .mp3 or .wav.

Comment by George July 9, 2008 @ 11:22 pm[...] I subscribed to Flavorpill’s Earplug many years ago, and even though its relevance and timeliness is negligible, I keep it around for the random gem every now and then. Last week’s issue of Earplug is a perfect example as it had a link to three micromixes from the members of Animal Collective. [...]
